None the Happier
Today I realised something very very startling…not that I haven’t heard it before…but never gave much attention to it. I have friends working in all sorts of jobs…software…accountancy…marketing…u name it…earning a handsome salary at the end of the month. BUT…no one is happy…no one is satisfied…no one looks forward to a new week. From what I have seen…6 months is what it takes for someone to lose the enthusiasm. Switching jobs need not necessarily be the best thing to do when you are fed up with your work after all !!! 6 months into a new job and there you go again. There is a reason why it startled me as much as it did. My dad is retiring this month end…Sep 30 will be his last day. He has worked in the same company for over 35 years. And I can tell for a fact that I have complained more in a year and half that I worked than he has in the last 25 years. I cannot explicitly remember him expressing his displeasure even once !!! Am still trying to figure out the reason. Work pressure? Pressure of competition? Fast paced lifestyle? Job becoming insanely routine? Marriage, kids, responsibility? Maybe!!! But I think the very definition of JOB has changed drastically. It is no more just earning a livelihood. Employees no more feel the same level of loyalty towards their employers and rightly so. It is more about “are we working in the field that we are interested in?”, “are we being paid appropriately?”, “Where will we stand in the next 5 years? will we be doing the same stuff or will we have gained something significant and grown?”, ”Does the job challenge or atleast match our potential?” and much more…
While you guys give this a thought…here’s wishing my dad a lovely new life ahead
